For me, my suitcase is a constant and much loved companion. I really love to travel. But this was not always the case. Even though I enjoyed my trips in the past as well – whether for business or my holiday travels – the change in schedule almost always threw off my eating routine (and most of the time also my fitness regimen). Don’t get me wrong, this was not due to me stuffing my face with junk food each time I arrived in another city. I simply suffered from a bad overall feeling each time when being torn from my daily routine and the foods that really work for me.
The tips that I suggest work whether you are following a specific diet – like I follow the Paleo lifestyle – or just simply want to feel good during all of your trips – and do not want to start troubleshooting again and again once you are back home. So, whether you’re whisked away to a tropical destination or headed for a business trip across the country, remember these 6 tips to stay healthy, energized and enjoy every minute of your trip. I wish you a wonderful journey!
1. Prepare Well
Make sure you check out the place/ area you will be staying beforehand and know what to expect. Check out the hotel’s facilities, the supermarkets close by and also the restaurants, so you can pre plan the groceries you should bring along and what you can buy or eat locally.
I prefer to stay in apartment hotels so I can prepare my own food making use of a refrigerator and stove. If this turns out not to be possible I will use the mini bar with its little refrigerator as my base and bring along the other required tools.
2. Pack Smart
Just so you don’t get a wrong impression of me: I love to try out regional specialties wherever I am. But in order to maintain my food routine I always bring some of my staples along – just in case. These items don’t need to be refrigerated so all of them can be easily packed away in my checked luggage. Most of the times those items include packaged nuts and dried fruits, raw honey as well as dried meat or canned fish.
Remember that preparation is key. Think about your trip beforehand and bring what you need so you're not stuck with an empty stomach and nothing but a McDonald’s around the corner.
3. Shop Smart
Stop by the local grocery store to get some go-to fruits or veggies. You should buy also all the other foods that work for you. You can keep a short list at hand so that you don’t miss out on any opportunities for your favourite healthy foods.
4. When at Restaurants, go á la Carte
When ordering at restaurants, stick to the foods that work best for you and never be shy of ordering á la carte. Go ahead and customize all the meals to meet your demands. I learned to do this, and even though I felt kind of brash about that at first, it turned out to be a real benefit for my health and well-being. Now I don’t feel like having to prove anything to anybody anymore. My health is worth it.
5. Stay Hydrated
Make sure you drink enough to stay sufficiently hydrated. For some strange reason, I always felt really dehydrated during all of my trips. This was due to the fact that I did not manage to drink the way I do at home – always having a bottle of water nearby. Now I force myself to carry a water bottle with me at all times or if this is not possible at least make sure to drink something every hour.
Relax. Don’t stress yourself about the changes in your routine. You cannot expect to stick to your normal eating schedule 100%. But if you try your best you will find yourself in a better condition than when you left. And you will also enjoy your trip all the way.
